Wedding Bell Blues by Julia Watts

I just finished my second read of this book. I was sure I had already posted a review of it here but I was wrong. So I don’t want to miss the opportunity to do it this time.

I first read this book back in March. I remember sitting on the couch and thinking, “what a shitty day outside. I need something light hearted to make me feel better.” I had been given a gift card and had some money burning a whole in my wallet. I searched around a bit and decided to take a chance on an author I had never heard of. And, I can tell you, I am so happy that I did.

Julia Watts has a fantastic way of telling a tale. This particular story begins right after the death of Lily Fox’s partner, Charlotte Maycomb. Charlotte’s parents are bible thumpers who, guided by their bible thumping son, decide they want custody of their dead daughter’s child. Lily and Charlotte planned to have and raise Mimi together and there was no way she would give her up without a fight.

Lily and her friend and neighbor, Ben McGilly come up with a plan to get married and appear to be a respectable family and thwart the Maycomb’s custody challenge. To do this, they move to a small town in Georgia where the McGillys are the county’s most powerful family.

This book is filled with fantastic dialogue and characters. The author does a wonderful job of putting the reader right there, standing along side Lily McGilly and her friends and new found family. The dialogue is so well written that I could hear the southern accents. Ms. Watts made me fall in love with Ben’s mother, father, and grandmother.

I highly recommend this short, funny book.
